Germany takes Nazi jokes seriously

Ever since the fall of Adolf Hitler and the Nazis, Germany has been extremely embarrassed of that piece of their history — kind of like how the U.S. feels bad about slavery, but worse because all of Germany is ashamed of the Holocaust, while the U.S. still has tons of Confederate-loving racists.
All over the southern U.S., you’ll see Confederate flags painted on homes and tattooed on strippers’ ass cheeks. I think that’s comparable to going to southern Germany and seeing Nazi flags everywhere. That wouldn’t happen though because everything Nazi-related is illegal in Germany.
A 30-year-old Canadian tourist was arrested this weekend in front of the Reichstag in Berlin after he jokingly saluted Hitler while his girlfriend filmed it. “This will get tons of likes on Facebook,” he thought.

Unaware that displaying symbols and gestures is a severe crime, the man was handcuffed and arrested by police within seconds. They also took the memory card from his girlfriend’s camera. Impersonating a Nazi is punishable by imprisonment, but the tourist will probably just receive a fine.
He was released on bail shortly after his arrest, and learned a valuable lesson: Germany has no sense of humor. Luckily for him though, they do somewhat tolerate ignorance. Otherwise, he’d be in prison right now getting some wiener schnitzel shoved into his arschloch like a sterbenschaf.

Back in 1996 I went into an AOL chatroom for German speakers and typed “Heil Hitler!” and the next day AOL called my house and told my parents. Then they put me on the phone and the AOL rep explained to me how sensitive an issue it was with Germans. I remember I even had to write a paper about it, don’t know if that was my parent’s idea or AOL’s. Imagine if the internet was like that today.
