Update: Shoe Camera Diaries

FLORIDA — Back in November 2009, I wrote about William B. Wright, who was arrested for peeping up women’s skirts with a nifty little hidden shoe camera modified from a regular digital camera.

Wright was charged with one felony and nine misdemeanor counts of video voyeurism, which he pleaded guilty to this week — nearly 20 months after he was arrested. Prosecutors could only charge him for having photos of women that they could identify, but there were over 200 videos and images of roughly 2,300 females. One of those victims was a 5-year-old girl videotaped inside a bathroom.

The felony charge stemmed from the 5-year-old in the video, but there was no other mention of Wright possessing any other inappropriate images of children. The rest of the victims appeared legal, unless there are 5-year-old girls running around with full-grown bushes — you never know these days.

A judge sentenced Wright to 45 days in jail for his crimes, which seems light, especially considering the felony. Either Wright has been in jail since he was arrested in 2009, or the judge thought his actions were amusing. However, most news outlets only prefer to give their readers some of the facts.

The main reason for this update is to show you the photos taken of Wright when he was arrested. In my original article, I didn’t even have a photo of him — just a photo of a generic shoe camera.

Now you can see — and maybe even appreciate — the knowledge of electronics that it must have required to build such an inconspicuous recording device. Wright should patent his invention.

The body of the camera was concealed inside his pants near his waist, while wires ran down his leg to the camera lens embedded in his shoe. A pocket triggering device was also wired to the camera.

If Wright positively applied his skills as an electronic tinkerer, he could probably make some major advances in technology that would benefit all of mankind. For example: X-ray sunglasses.

You can find instructions for how to build your own shoe camera online. You don’t have to use it for looking up women’s skirts — you can also use it to peep underneath bathroom stall dividers. Seriously though, avoid getting caught because you don’t want to make any women feel unsafe. And NO kids.
